The Key to an SAHM's Sanity

Of all the jobs in the world, they say a stay-at-home-mom's (SAHM) job is the toughest one. We are expected to run the household and multi-task. Nothing can prepare us for this job. We learn to go with the flow (not exactly smooth ones) and are expected to wear many hats at home. We help ourselves solve specific tasks, as much as possible. Those without external help would know what I mean. It's not so much of physical tiredness. It's just.... emotionally draining.

The many sleepless nights with my bubs at this stage, as I was nursing both of them concurrently.
Having been a SAHM for the last 13 years, there are possibly many things that I could have done to better manage my well-being, IF I had known better. Opportunities to manage the burnout feeling I felt at the end of the day was too insignificant to remember that I am being appreciated at home. I was an angry, grouchy and emotional mom in the earlier years. My identity was lost until my children went to school. Only then I could find a little bit more time to myself to pursue my interests.

Selfies did exist in the year 2004! :p

So listen up, all you new SAHMs out there, especially with the younger bubs who are not yet in school. This is really really important to have.

Looking back, I think it would have been perfectly alright to ask for some time off, to remember there is a 'me'. Moms are the reason for the existence of our children and I don't see why SAHMs should not take regular healthy time-offs to recharge and be energized. Wouldn't it be nice to go home feeling ready to face new challenges and embrace our family with a more loving and positive mind?

So whether you can squeeze in some time off to have a meal alone (without having to eat leftovers), get a hair wash at your neighborhood salon, bake a cake - anything that will make you feel on top of the world. Do it. You will appreciate yourself more. Your family would too.

Here's a recent photo of us enjoying each others' company! When they are older, things get much easier despite teenage angst. That's another story for another day. :)

  Till the next post, have a blessed week!

Next up on the blog train!

Pauline, a mother-of-two, a home cook, a baker and a crafter. She has been a SAHM for almost 7 years now and she’s still enjoying every minute of being one. Days with the children, to her, are never dull and having a hobby or something interesting to be kept busy with makes life so much more easier. Beyond her interest in cooking, baking and sewing, blogging keeps her sane as she shares with many like-minded moms about her struggles, moments of pride and everything in between, so visit her blog tomorrow to find out more!

[Recipe] Chicken Chop Hor Fun

Oh I am, by all means, trying to re-create my favorite chicken chop hor fun at Changi Village. Of course, it doesn't taste exactly the same, otherwise I'll be that famous hawker there! Something was missing. Perhaps pork lard?  But I'm not one that will go out my way to prepare pork lard, nor have I used it in any of my home cooking. However, I think this was a good meal for the family. A sign of a good meal is when there is no leftover. (or maybe it was a sign that the food was not enough)

Preparation time : approx.30 mins   Serves : 4 - 5

I bought 2 packets of commercially packed kway teow from the chilled section at the supermarket, about 400gm each packet. Blanched and set aside.

Ingredients needed to marinade the chicken :
- 2 boneless chicken thighs
- 2 dashes of sesame oil
- 2 dashes of pepper (or adjust to your liking)
- 2 tbsp light soya sauce

Leave to marinade for at least half and hour before cooking them.

Coating to fry the chicken :
- 1 egg, beaten
- corn flour

I used the airfryer for this. If you have one and choose to use it too, pre-heat the fryer first at 180 degrees celcius. Lay foil paper in the basket just before you fry the chicken, to help with easier clean up. Otherwise, you can choose to use your conventional oven or deep fry. I'm too chicken to deep fry in my kitchen.

Method :
- coat each piece of chicken in the egg and then lightly coat it in corn flour. Shake of excess flour before placing it in the basket. Skin side up.

- "fry" it for 12 minutes then turn the chicken, and "fry" it for another 8 minutes.
- Set aside.

Ingredients for the gravy :
- caixin or xiao bai cai vegetables (Amount at your discretion)
- A few pieces of black chinese mushrooms. Soaked in warm water, and sliced when it's soften. Save the mushroom stock as part of your flavoring for the gravy.
-1 tbsp minced garlic
- 2 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp light soya sauce
- 1 tsp sugar
- 2 tbsp cornflour
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 rice bowls of water
- A few stalks of spring onions for garnishing

Cooking the gravy :
- fry the garlic till fragrant
- add mushrooms and vegetables, continue to stir fry.
- add oyster sauce, light soya sauce, sugar, salt, pepper and water. Let it simmer.
- Add cornflour to thicken the gravy.

Before serving, prepare a portion of kway teow onto a plate and scoop sufficient amount of gravy on it before giving it a good mix. Then place the chicken, mushrooms and vegetables on top.

Garnish with spring onions and serve hot.

Enjoy!

My good friend Diana, from the  Domestic Goddess Wannabe, and I had so much fun linking up with each other on our different cooking style of "hei bi hiam" some time back that we decided to challenge ourselves this round, to cook different dishes comprising of kway teow as it's main ingredient.

Diana is a food blogger, an excellent home chef and an inspirational baker. You will not want to miss what she has whipped up with her drool-worthy kway teow recipe!

2013 - A Year of Gratitude

As I get older, I am more mindful of the little things in life that truly matters to me. One of the most essential to "living life to the fullest", is choosing (as much as I can) to stay positive and think of the happy moments instead of focusing on the negative ones. I've always believed that happy thoughts generate happy cells in one's body. Sicknesses are somehow kept at bay and happy vibes infects people around you too. Happiness is truly not something you can place a price tag on.

Looking back at 2013, there are many little things I am grateful for that made my year a memorable one.

  • Watching my 13 year old son gain some independence after starting secondary school. I can now run my necessary errands and leave him to come home on his own and settle his own meals. It is a little load off my mind.
  • My husband and I celebrated 16 years of marriage. Though we've never celebrated it in any fanciful or romantic way, I am happier that he takes the time to plan and take the family for a few short getaways this year. Vacation time with the family often means a lot more to me than one candle light dinner.
  • Reminding myself why I love what I do - keeping my lifestyle jewelries creations affordable. It's really not about the money, money, money! It's the passion that keeps what I do, alive.
  • I had my first makeover! Well only on the face but there was much to learn from the session hosted by Florinda. It was a fantastic time spent with women I know!
  • I never thought there will be a day that I will gather ingredients and prepare an oreo mud pie! If not for my little girl's request, I don't think I would. I hope she realizes that the little things I do for her is out of love.
  • Now, if you know me, I am TOTALLY NOT a night owl. But for a late night date with my hubby, I did it. We went for an extraordinary date to Senoko Fishery Port!
  • The kids and I also made out debut on TV for a programme interview on why I blog. Even though the airtime was very short, it was the experience that mattered.

As we usher in 2014 in a few hours, I pray for peace, health and happiness to continue to reign within the family. And a special wish to all my readers for the same blessings for your families too.

Cheers to 2014!

Behind The Scene of My TV Debut - On The Red Dot

I was recently contacted via email by one of Channel NewsAsia's producer, Sian Choo, who was doing research on a story about "Sharenting" for a local programme called "On The Red Dot". She requested for a phone interview with me, hoping that I could help fill her in with information about why I blog. I obliged.

Perhaps why I started blogging intrigued her because the reason was clearly the peer influence. Yes! The mums in Singapore Mom Bloggers are surely an influential lot! From someone who has lost touch with writing in a diary for more than 20 years, the thought of journalling my moments for all to see seemed daunting. However, I'm very happy where my blogging adventure has taken me for the past 19 months.

A few days after the phone interview, Sian Choo called me up again. This time, it became clearer. She wanted me to be interviewed on TV!  I declined to do the TV interview a couple of times, asking her if she can somehow incorporate my story into the program without me appearing on TV. But, her sincerity won me over. I thought, since it was not something I would do as a norm and for the experience sake, why not?
Sian Choo and the filming crew, fussing over me as they were setting up the lighting and sound.
The particular story Sian Choo was covering focused on parents who blog, tweet and post pictures of their lives. Particularly with children. She wanted to know why we blog and what was it that we want to share with the world.

So, being the kind of person who likes to plan and not really liking any surprises (ok lah, kiasi), I asked her for a list of questions she would be asking me about. So I diligently typed out my answers and printed it on paper for my reference, just in case I had to because I didn't want to be stumped. Here were her questions and my answers.

How did your blog first started, and  why?
Actually I started a photoblog in March last year and was searching for a like-minded group in Facebook to share with when I chanced upon this newly set up facebook group for Singapore Mom Bloggers. I was very surprised to discover many mom bloggers journaling their children’s milestones, sharing their challenges and snippets of their lives.  A month down the road, I got influenced, in a good way.  So I decided to start a blog, thus my blog name - The Accidental Mom Blogger.

What do you usually like to blog about, and why?

I usually blog about matters close to my heart. The challenges I face as a stay-at-home-mom, the building of relationships with my children and sharing memories of my own growing up years. Sometimes I also have a say on trending issues in Singapore like education or on social graces. Other times, I share my simple home cooked recipes or journal about my jewelry crafting. Blogging has become an outlet for me to express my feelings and at the end of the day, it’s all about sharing my experience. Perhaps another mom who is reading a particular post can relate with me, pick up a tip or two and know they are not alone in their challenges.

Do your children know about your blog?
Oh yes they do. If it’s a post that concerns them, I would make them read it to see my point of view. Hopefully they will understand why I do what I do. If not now, then in the future when they are facing with parenting challenges. My blog would serve as a reference for them.

Hmmm, this is probably one of the rare times when my dining table is cleared of my work barang barang!
How are their response & reactions so far?
Initially, it was not something they were comfortable about but they kind of warmed up (or I would like to think they do) to my blogging adventure so we’re all quite okay now. There is definitely a trust that's been built on what I will share and what I will not.

And KayCee the dog becomes an overnight star, with tricks she earnestly performed for the camera!

 What are some of the things you will definitely not post?
I will certainly not post sensitive issues that would hurt my family, extended families and friends.

How do you draw the line between what’s private & public?
I am mindful not to divulge any intimate and embarrassing details of myself or anyone in the family – unless it’s meant to be tongue-in-cheek. So topics like revealing specific exam scores or about my children reaching puberty are a no-no for me. If I have to write a post similar to these topics, I would generalize the content.

Are you aware of digital footprints? Do you think your children will be affected by your blog sharing?
As long as I maintain a positive attitude when I blog about the challenges with my children, I believe it will not affect their lives. I am aware that what I share online is searchable, but what I share is also real to me. It is a part and parcel of growing up in Singapore and I believe many Singaporean parents can relate. What I write about my children now is not reflective of how they will contribute to society in the future. So I do not think it poses a problem.

There. Sounded simple? It wasn't. And you know what? It didn't really matter what I typed out in the list of questions given to me. I was stumped anyway! I think typing out my thoughts are much easier than when I speak it out.

 Although I was the least bit nervous (very unlike me though I fidgeted over my unrefined looking hair and wondered all the time if Rosli, the cameraman, was filming a flattering side of my face or focusing on my tummy), it was the repeated necessary interruption (the N.G.s to be precise) due to background noise from trucks on the road, made the thinking process difficult.  For each time I had to repeat what I had said before the N.G., my answers came out very differently!

Alas, after watching the programme, none of the essential questions were aired anyway... ah well...

In case you missed the programme, here is the link to the show. I am very happy to be sharing this segment together with my fellow mom blogger friend, Jiahui from www.mumseword.com, who was also interviewed for this segment. And thanks to her for putting up this direct video link on the 'sharenting' portion for my readers to enjoy!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you are also a parent blogger like me, I invite you to share your thoughts on sharenting and link me up!
Why do you blog? What is it you want to share with the public? And what is it you wish to achieve?
(You may use the above questions posed to me as a guide for your post.)
[Recipe] Fried Hokkien Mee
Truth be told, this dish often tastes so good when we get from our local hawkers because of the pork lard that they use to fry the noodles. My home cooked version does not have pork lard because ermmm, I've honestly never handled them before and have no intention to!
My homecooked fried hokkien mee version is equally flavorful. Thanks to the prawn and pork soup stock that I've used. As I couldn't get fresh-looking squid the day I prepared this, it is regretfully, one ingredient short. Though I've replaced it with fish cake slices which my children very much prefer.
Estimated total time to prepare : 2 hours  Makes : 5 servings
Ingredients :
- 1 portion of pork belly, sliced thinly (about 150 grams)
- 300 grams medium fresh prawns
- 1 packet fresh thick vermicelli (or laksa bee hoon)
- 1 packet fresh yellow noodles
- 2 pcs of fish cake, lightly pan fried and sliced
- 3 eggs (or 2 eggs, if you prefer)
-  a few stalks of spring onions, cut into finger lengths
- 2 tbsp minced garlic
- 2 tbsp fish sauce
- 1 teaspoon light soya sauce
- salt and pepper
- 2 tbsp cooking oil
Preparation :
1) Boil the whole piece of pork belly with about 2 soup bowls of water with a pinch of salt. Leave it to boil till tender, for about 1 hour.
2) When done, take out the meat and add in the prawns into the pork stock to cook for about 10 minutes.
3) Take out the prawns and de-shell/de-vein them when cooled. Don't discard the prawn heads and shell after they are de-shelled. Put them back into the stock and continue to let it simmer for another hour or so. Add a tsp of salt to the stock.
4) Loosen and blanch the noodles before frying this dish.
How to cook :
1) fry the garlic till fragrant and add the noodles, together with the fish sauce and light soya sauce. Toss the noodle till well mixed and transfer them out into a bowl.
2) In the same wok, add some oil to fry the egg till fragrant and scramble them.
3) Add in the other ingredients : prawns, pork, fish cake and spring onion. Fry for a bit.
4) Add in the noodles, mix it with the ingredients and add about 2 rice bowls of soup stock. (you can add more if you prefer a wetter version of hokkien mee)
5) Cover the wok and let it simmer for about 3-5 minutes so that the flavors can be absorbed in the noodles.
6) Serve hot with fried shallot topping and sambal chilli.
7) Enjoy!
It was supposed to be a surprised visit planned by the hubs and kiddos. All I was told to do : "just bring your camera! You wouldn't want to miss this!" ... although the love of my kiddos to me couldn't bear the test of keeping a secret before we arrived. :p
[Recipe] Bakwan Kepiting
Bakwan kepiting is a wholesome, very lightly flavored yet appetizing peranakan soup-based dish comprising of crab meat, prawn meat, bamboo shoots and minced pork rolled into a ball. It was only during special occasions that we got to eat this while growing up because crabs and prawns were not considered affordable in our household.
In my version, I've kept the crab and prawn meat chunky instead of finely minced as it mostly is because I wanted to taste the different textures when I bite into it. However, do feel free to minced all the ingredients to your personal liking.
Here are the ingredients to prepare (makes about 16 medium sized bakwan) :
- 300gm minced pork
- 1 pkt crab meat (I used a shortcut and bought raw/frozen crab leg meat instead.)
- 10 pcs medium sized prawns, chopped
- 2 pcs of bamboo shoots thinly sliced. (I used canned bamboo shoots by Mili brand. There are easily 4-5 pcs in a can. You can keep the balance to make poh piah or fried spring rolls!)
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp corn flour
- 1 tbsp taucheo paste (preserved soy bean paste)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 soup bowls of water
- 1 tbsp fish sauce
Method :
1) Put all the meat and 80% of the bamboo shoot in a bowl. Add the cornflour and egg. Mix well and leave aside.
2) Fry the garlic, the balance bamboo shoot and taucheo paste in your casserole till fragrant.
3) Add water and let it boil.
4) Scoop the marinated meat into ball shapes and place into the soup base. You can firm the shape of the ball with your palm too.
5) Once all the bakwan are in the casserole, add the fish sauce and let it cook for 20-30 minutes.
6) Remember to do your taste test and adjust the salt level to your preference.
While the bakwan cooks, you may want to make your own sambal belachan (spicy shrimp chilli) that goes extremely well as a dip! I made a small portion of 2 fresh chillis and 1 tsp of belachan. Nowadays, you can get prepared belachan paste in a glass bottle by Lee Kum Kee so I use that for my cooking. Blend the 2 together and viola!
If you like coriander leaves, do get them and serve it as garnish together with the soup!
p.s. This soup tastes even more awesome if there are balance to keep for the next day. :)
Definition of Happiness
With the world obsessed with social medias, it has somehow created an illusion of a perfect life existence that is quite unattainable. Is there a bar on which we base our happiness? Is there a standard to meet?
How do we measure happiness?
It is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy, that makes happiness.
- Charles Spurgeon
Happiness doesn't depend on any external conditions, it is governed by our mental attitude.
- Dale Carnegie
Do any of us know real happiness when we have it?
For some, it is spiritual, for other is may be material or superficial things.
For me, it is a lifetime of small moments of happiness that matter - quiet moments with my children, holding hands with my husband, enjoying girly times with my girlfriends and the annual family vacation.
I'm not in a lifetime search for one BIG time happiness. As they always say, good things come in small packages. I believe happiness are made of small packages. :)
How about you?
[Entrepreneurial Mama Series] Get To Know Diana Gale
Mention the name Diana Gale within our Singapore Mom Bloggers community and everyone will almost immediately associate her as the baking guru! Apart from baking, she is also a regular chef at home! From Chinese, to Korean to western and Italian dishes, she is a chef in her own rights!
But apart from her talent in cooking and baking, she is also a capable home business owner -  that not everyone may be aware about! Read on to find out more about Diana (seen here in the photo with her husband) in my on-going series interviewing our local entrepreneurial moms.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Tell us a bit more about yourself.

I am a Work-At-Home-Mom with 2 kids - Aden (3.5yo) and Jadelyn (1yo). After leaving the teaching profession, I became a full-time tutor. About 8 years ago, my husband and I set up a foreign student services business and a homestay. I also own a tutor agency, and continue to tutor part-time. In addition to that, a year ago, we set up Babyplace, an online store that sells clothes and accessories for kids from newborns to the ages of seven.

You are indeed a busy mom! Let's talk about Babyplace! When and how did Babyplace came about?

Babyplace started because I became so exasperated with buying clothes online for my son. There were constant delays with couriers not turning up, poor communication on the seller's part and having to wait what seemed like forever for my items to turn up. I thought to myself, "Surely I can do better than that!" At Babyplace, we pride ourselves on the fact that any queries are very quickly attended to, and once we have received payments for any purchases, the items are shipped out either on the same day, or at the latest the next working day.

Who or what influenced the decision to start up this business?

Talking to many of my friends who also had children around the time that I did, I discovered that I was not alone in feeling that sellers can do a better job. In addition, kids grow at such a rapid pace from the time they were born till they are about 10, so we found that we had to constantly source for new clothes, especially loads of  inexpensive home-wear and pyjamas since they get soiled so quickly. It was then that I decided to go for it, and try my hand at retail.

What were the challenges while setting up Babyplace?

The biggest challenges were definitely sourcing for suppliers who were reliable. There are dishonest suppliers who would ship products of inferior quality and we had to build good relationships with the suppliers that we could trust. The other problem was setting up the website - neither my husband nor I had any experience setting up online stores and he had to study and learn through trial and error for months before the shop was finally ready!

How do you decide what you want to bring in that may appeal to the masses?

Apart from sourcing diligently online, I also talk to my friends and customers to find out what they like. In addition, I study new trends from popular brands to learn what may be popular for the upcoming seasons. Of course, we do not stock up on Winter wear since it is not necessary in Singapore. So we make sure we have enough new items from the Spring/Summer collections so there are always choices one can make from the shop.

What is the most popular category in your shop?

The most popular items are definitely the pyjamas and home-wear. We have a large selection of these and all our clothing are made of 100% cotton and are durable so they keep their shapes even after many rounds of washing. We also make sure that the clothes we sell are suitable for the weather in Singapore. We also have a good collection of authentic branded wear at a fraction of the cost in retail shops. They are also very popular.

Share with us your other passions!

I love to cook and to bake, so I blog about my cooking and baking experiments on my blog - thedomesticgoddesswannabe.com. I believe that we always have time to cook/bake, and many dishes can be made using very easy cooking techniques. I guess what I am trying to do is to dispel the myth that cooking/baking is difficult and intimidating and hopefully, inspire more people to try their hand at making something for their families.

Grocery Shopping In My PJs

It had been the gloomiest period I have ever experienced, with the worst haze situation shrouding Singapore during the 3rd week of June. What made it worst was that it was during the school holidays and instead of enjoying some good outdoor time with my daughter which I had planned, we had to coop ourselves up in the study room instead with the air-conditioning on throughout the day for a good 4 days!

At times like these, I am certainly thankful for the invention of the internet. I could still socialize and communicate with the world beyond my study room which helped lessened the dreadfulness of the burning smell in the air. It was also during this time that I thought, would be the perfect time to do some online shopping since it is always open 24 hours a day.

Oh excuse this big yellow poster! But that was truly how I felt when I was going shopping and I thought you should know!

RedMart.com came to mind when I decided to do my inaugural grocery shopping online. It was the perfect time to have a go at this as I had not gone out to the neighborhood supermarket to stock up on some necessities due to the dreadful haze.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that they are very well stocked, just like any supermarket when I embarked on my shopping. And oh you should have heard my husband comment - "you're still at it??!!", after an hour. Teehee... well I can't help but browse through every category just to make sure that I don't miss out on something that I need. It happens to me so very often when I am physically at the supermarket and I would miss out on something just because I didn't pass by that particular aisle. So am really glad that I did a precised shopping at the site!

I was particularly drawn to this category and was thrilled to find the products that I want to use and got a handful of items from here! (screen shot image from RedMart.com)

Their prices are competitive which means that letting my fingers do the shopping here would really save myself a lot of time and hassle. A big plus for me - I would not need to carry all these heavy stuff home since I am usually the one taking care of the grocery shopping!

 Double yippee!!!

The process of my final order to checkout was a breeze! My groceries arrived as per my selected date and promptly at a stipulated time of my choice.

My loot for the whole family!

Am very pleased with what RedMart.com has to offer so far and will not hesitate to make my next round of purchases with them when I next need to stock up on the necessities! Hassle free shopping like this is a time saver!
