DIY Terrarium for Home Decor

[This is a product review for Floral Garage Singapore. No monetary compensation was made. All opinions expressed here are my own.]

Making a terrarium to enhance the decor of my home has never crossed my mind. Ever. That's because I know I have zilch green thumb and it would be a real pity to put in the effort to plant yet not see it survive. Though I don't deny that a mini table top garden is one of the best ways to add a little greenery to an indoor space especially when most of us are living in apartments in Singapore.

My 16 year old son, Brandon, is quite the complete opposite of me in the greenery department. He recently revealed to me that he loves plants, which caught me by surprise. Well actually, I shouldn't be surprised that much because I know he is a nature and animal lover. When I asked him if he would like to try out making a terrarium, which the kind people at Floral Garage Singapore approached me to try, he was more than happy to give it a go... on my behalf... because... you know why...

The 'Premium DIY Terrarium Kit' arrived at my doorstep a few days later. I literally wowed to the delivery guy as I was not expecting it to come in such a huge and heavy box. There was a generous assortment of plants, gravels and premium soil mixes supply for our use. (More than enough supply to make 3 or 4 terrariums, me thinks!) This premium kit came with 2 very gorgeous high quality glass bowl/jar, which was the highlight for me. I also super adore the cute miniature gardening tools and spray bottle that came with it! Apart from a pair of scissors, we were good to go with making our terrarium since everything else has been provided for. At this point, I think my excitement meter went up quite a bit. I could not wait for Brandon to complete the terrariums!

Brandon spearheaded this project, while I was just his assistant, handing him the tools and topping up the gravels that he needed as he followed the step by step guide provided in the box. He knew exactly what he needed to do to build the terrariums so I would give this two thumbs up for any beginner.

It took him about 45 minutes to complete both terrariums, one with the open bowl and the other jar with lid. I mentioned earlier that he is a nature lover, so imagine when he said this, "Mum, I feel pain for the plants" while he was pruning the roots! *faint* But well, we did learn that it is a necessary step to trim the long overgrown roots if transferring out from a pot to another, before we nestle the plants so that it can re-establish itself into new soil.

The process of building these terrariums was very therapeutic for Brandon and I am glad that this may be an additional outlet for him to find relaxation from the daily stresses at school. Unfortunately though, the open bowl terrarium did not last us more than 3 days. (!!!) We are not sure what went wrong though we highly suspect it could be the initial over watering due to over enthusiasm or the lack of sunlight or both. On the other hand, I am so pleased to report that the terrarium in the enclosed glass jar is still THRIVING!

Can you see the sloping landscape? We added some larger decorative pebbles of our own to make it look more foresty. Brandon wants to look for tiny decorative pokemons to add into this little garden. Well... until he finds them, I'm happy with what we have in our home now.
The enclosed jar terrarium is truly self-sustaining, since it can provide enough humidity within the enclosure thus creating its own little ecosystem. It requires almost zero attention from us apart from a little weekly water spray job that Brandon has committed himself to do. It's been 4 weeks and it still looks exactly the same as the day it was built. I am really pleased looking at such a lovely little garden in our living room whenever I walk past it. (And pssst, we will be re-working on the open terrarium again soon! We just need to get more plants!)

All in all, I am really glad that we were given the opportunity to experience building terrariums in the heart of our home and at our convenience. I would recommend this to anyone who has no experience with plants to give the enclose jar terrarium a go as it is by far, the easiest to care for.

If you are keen to own a terrarium for your home too, do visit Floral Garage Singapore to see the variety of terrarium categories and DIY kits that they have recently launched. I think these make absolute great gifts for house warming and birthdays for those who probably have everything but a terrarium! While you are checking out the terrariums with them, do also check out the other customized floral gifts and party supply needs. And you know what's the best part? They pride themselves as a social enterprise so it's always good to know you will be indirectly playing a part to help others in need, when you make your purchases from them.

Neostrata Triple Firming Neck Cream Review + Giveaway Worth S$405!

[This is a sponsored product review, written based on my own personal experience over the past 9 weeks. No monetary compensation is involved. The content is original and opinion expressed here are 100% my own.]

“As we age, we produce less collagen and pigmentation becomes more mottled resulting in sagging, discolored skin in the challenging neck and décolletage,” said Joel Schlessinger, MD, a leading US dermatologist and Director of Advanced Skin Research Center in Omaha, NE. “Triple Firming Neck Cream helps rebuild the skin’s matrix, encouraging pro-collagen and hyaluronic acid and protecting skin’s essential cells, to lift and firm skin and even tone to diminish the appearance of age spots.”

I cannot agree more.

When I was approached to try Neostrata Triple Firming Neck Cream, I was very hesitant because reviewing beauty related products were not in my cards. Moreover, I am quite fussy over the products that I choose to use on my sensitive skin and anything unsuitable will result in breakouts or rashes. Though I knew at the back of my mind, I needed help with the obvious neck creases that has been plaguing me in recent years. I would have liked to think that I did try to take good care of my neck as much as possible, by conveniently extending the application of my facial moisturizer on it. I have never noticed any improvement of sorts and was not that concerned about it. I guess this is what happens when it is not a specific targeted cream.

After much convincing that the product would yield positive results in the targeted neck area, I made the exception to try the product out on a non-obligatory basis and IF it goes well, I would agree review it.  I will have you know that I am a skeptic at heart. Then again, I thought, after all, it is appropriate to condition my decolletage (neckline) area since I do model my handmade necklace creations and share it on my instagram. Moreover, I am at that age (turning 43 and not shy about it!) where I should take charge of caring for myself and fight Newton's law of gravity.

Factually, it was not until I have to compare photos during this review that I noticed my neck creases were this visible, especially in photos. Now I shudder at the thought of having a crinkly neck!

About Neostrata
Neostrata is scientifically advanced and clinically proven, in their skincare products. It aims at helping to resurface, restore and refine skin. Neostrata has been proven to be effective for almost all skin types and conditions such as hyperpigmentation, dryness, eczema and acne. Their dermatology developed skincare is recommended and highly regarded by experts around the world.

I thought I would just share a photo I had taken back in 2011. Though the neck crease here is not immediately noticeable, it was already showing signs. What a difference 4 years make!

My Experience and Results
Firstly, I am very particular about how skin cream smells. Anything too strong or very artificially scented, especially those with sticky residue, is a no go for me. So I am pleased to state that the Neostrata Triple Firming Neck Cream is hardly even scented, very easily applied and absorbed into the skin - a big plus for the fussy me. This was diligently done twice a day, for 8 weeks, in the morning and night, covering from the area of my jawline, back of the neck and the decolletage area.

The photo take on the left was just before I started using the neck cream. Notice that the jawline area appears firmer on the right photo, and the neck lines are comparatively much softer. The skin also seems to be tauter and hydrated.

I was recommended to give it at least 4-6 weeks to see visible results but I only began to see clearer results on my 8th week. Hence, it will be good to note that results will vary from person to person. I personally feel that there could also be other attributes that may have caused the delay of results. These would be :

 - The way I sleep, as I tend to lie on my left side more. So in this review, I am particularly focused on the results on the left side of my neck. (The firming up of the jawline area came as a surprise bonus!)
- My sitting posture while I work on my jewelry or while I am on the computer, as it is not at eye level, so the tendency of looking downwards at an angle is very very high.
- Using the mobile phone while propped at an angle while lying on my bed.
- I also seem to have a bad habit not keeping my neck straight at times, tilting my neck to my left more.

I think it will also be useful to be on track with the neck exercises that I have been inconsistent with, which would be very relevant to help with further toning and strengthening the neck muscles as well.

The reason for my smile! :) The area beneath my chin seem tauter when compared to the photo on the left. I have also noticed that the dark shadowy line beneath my chin is somewhat lightened, even for the pigmentation at the decolletage area. The neck creases are visibly softer too. Though of course, I feel it still needs the continued use of the neck cream to yield even better results!

[Note : These photos were taken at the same area in my home but at different times of the day with my mobile phone.]

My Verdict
I am pretty impressed with the results that I am seeing so far. Neostrata Triple Firming Neck Cream does work and has proven to be progressively renewing the condition of my skin. It is no wonder that they were recently featured in Elle magazine's 'Beauty IT List 2015' for the 'best new neck cream'! It is not difficult to maintain a more youthful appearance in the decolletage area, only if I bother to take 2 minutes of my time each day to condition my neck. After more than 11 weeks' of using this product (I am on my 2nd tube already), this has become an important daily routine.

I am now a little bit more confident in taking selfies (or neckfie?) with a broader view of the full neckline now while modeling my handmade necklaces, instead of cropping off the areas where the neck creases used to be more visible.

As a gauge from my usage, squeezing about a 5 cents coin size amount each time, a tube can last you about 9-10 weeks so I think it is a worthwhile investment to take on the preventive measures and avoid a premature wrinkled neck!

I can't wait to try their range of anti-aging cream on my face and see how it can help me too!

What does the cream contain to make it work?
Here are the technical excerpts which you may wish to know, taken from the press release provided by Neoasia.

"Triple Firming Neck Cream is formulated with a powerful blend of Neostrata proprietary and other selectively sourced ingredients. Clinically proven NeoGlucosamine helps increas hyaluronic acid and evens pigment, while NeoCitriate targets new collagen to lift and firm. Pro-Amino Acid increases pro-collagen to help diminish wringles. Additionally, Swiss Apple Stem Cell Extract helps protect the longevity of skin's essential cells, helping older cells behave like those in younger skin."

Engaging a Local Part Time Cleaner Through Helpling!

[I have been invited to review Helpling's cleaning service. This blog post is written based on my own personal experience. No monetary compensation is involved. The content is original and opinions expressed here are 100% my own.]

I have had help with household chores ever since giving birth to my first child more than 14 years ago, from part time cleaners. But it has been close to 4 years since I engaged one, to manage some of the chores in my home. Okay, I admit it - my last engagement was a foreign part time cleaner. She came to clean my home every fortnightly, mostly to take care of my load of ironing. It was through hearsay that the cleaner had a work permit in Singapore, though I never truly probe directly from her, what kind of work pass she was holding to be cleaning homes around our island. I guess back then, I was just heartened when she told me she cleaned houses here so that she could put her child to school in Singapore. It was an honest living and I could relate to her as a mother, wanting the best for her child. Though I now know better that this could have implicated both parties if ever it was discovered to be illegal.

I can also put myself in the shoes of others who are out to work and didn't have live in helpers. Many rely heavily on such part time cleaners too. It would be most unfortunate if the cleaners they have hired are unreliable and do not turn up for their assignment or decide to stop work without prior notice, leaving them in a momentous lurch that can be very trying until another help is found.

"Who can I trust with the chores when I am at work?"
"How can I spend quality time with the family on weekends if I don't get the chores done?"
"How can I relax with so much housework to catch up on?"

As for me, I was particularly bogged down with the pile of my husband's office shirts in my laundry basket that I cannot seem to finish ironing.  It is the most time consuming job for me when I could have been more fruitful investing that amount of time in my jewelry work. So I was hoping that someone could relieve me of this chore.

When Helpling came along to render their services, I was eager to try it out. Having another go at engaging help from a local part time cleaner this time, is something not very far in my mind since I have been busy with jewelry orders. I prefer this arrangement too as compared to having a live-in helper, so that we can all enjoy our privacy.

The post weekend mess in my living room before cleaning versus the tidied version on the right.  I love squeaky clean floors!
What is Helpling?
Helpling is an online platform service connecting us with insured and trusted local cleaners from their pool of independent cleaners. Helpling hails from Germany and launched their services in Singapore earlier this year, their very first Asia's platform.

What are the charges like?
The fees start from S$18 an hour for a weekly or bi-weekly basic cleaning service, which includes dusting/wiping visible spaces, vacuuming and mopping of floor, washing the bathrooms, clearing the trash. The number of work hours depend highly on the size of your apartment. Additional services like ironing or cleaning windows are chargeable add ons. For a detailed price list with no hidden costs, please refer to this LINK.

What I appreciate about this service is that there is no binding contract to adhere to. As long as you need someone to help with cleaning, they will have someone (whom you can entirely trust) hired at your preferred day and time. They also accept one-off cleaning services and best of all, if you are comfortable with a cleaner you have met, you can request for the same cleaner for recurring service!

My Experience with the Helpling Cleaner Assigned to Me
Emma was assigned to clean my home the other day. The first thing that I was appreciative of was her punctuality and unfazed attitude toward our pet dog, which was cordoned off in our service balcony while she cleaned, since I respect that she is a Muslim and may not be comfortable with a dog around. That's professionalism!

After a short chat with her (so that we can be a little bit acquainted), I left her to decide what she would like to work on first. By the way, she was engaged to take on a 3 hour cleaning in my 5 room flat plus a 1 hour ironing add on service.

I like that she is a fast and agile worker (and clearly enjoying her work with the music that I put on the background). She also moves around like stealth while I worked on my jewelry orders at the dining table, leaving me with the private space that I needed. She started off ironing the clothes for slightly more than hour before stopping to work on cleaning the living room, 3 bedrooms, vacuuming, mopping the floor and washing the bathrooms. She was done in 2.5 hours. With the remaining half an hour more before her scheduled time ended, she took the initiative to continue ironing the clothes again. In a total of 1.5 hours, she managed to iron 10 cotton shirts whereas I would usually take 18-20 minutes to iron one! *faint* So yes, I reiterate, this part is my greatest help of all!

The cleaning package does not include changing of bed sheets but I appreciate that she bothered to make my bed so nicely, as with the kids' beds too!
Before she left my home, she asked me to check to see if everything was in place and that if I am satisfied with her cleaning. I have no doubt with her honesty and ability, even though this was the first time I met her. I especially appreciate the flexibility that she has exercised on this cleaning assignment. She certainly takes pride in her job.

Judging from my earlier conversation with her, she was totally unaware of this blog engagement to review Helpling's services. So everything that I have experienced with her work style is true to the standard that Helpling has committed to provide to their customers. Kudos to Emma for a job well done! (I would have liked to take a photo of her working in my home, but I thought that I should respect her privacy as well.)

My favorite TV console area with precious family moments, all dust and clutter free!
It sounds like a fantastic job done! How do I book a service?
Just head on to this LINK, book a date and a trusted cleaner will be assigned to your home! Or you can book through their latest phone app - search for 'Helpling'. You only pay securely online via credit card, after the cleaning is complete. For more information on booking, visit this LINK

[Review + Special Deal For My Readers] Trapped - Singapore's Leading Reality Escape Rooms

When Trapped invited me to review their reality escape rooms, I knew right away it was more for my teenage son to experience as he is an avid online gamer and would appreciate what Trapped has to offer. It was easy for him to round up a group of school friends and I chaperoned them to Trapped's first outlet at Kandahar Street. It couldn't have been more appropriate to mark the end of their mid year exams and the beginning of the school term break!

What is Trapped?

Trapped is a leading 5D reality escape room attraction in Singapore, whereby players are trapped in a themed room, tested on their puzzle solving skills while searching for clues to find the key in order to escape from the room within 60 minutes. It has a current 4.5 star rating by the TripAdvisor community.

There are 5 movie themed rooms to choose from -

//Hunger Games : The Escape // Hansel & Gretel // - both at Kandahar Street.
//World War 3 : Zombie Edition // Friday the 13th // Sooperdooperz (superheroes) // - at *Scape

A short briefing of the dos and don'ts, before they ventured into the room.
The youths chose "Hunger Games : The Escape" theme because they are fans of the movie and most familiar with the storyline. I was given the privilege to join them in the room, all the while observing how the game was played.

The Experience

Even though I was joining them in the room as an observer, it felt a little unnerving to enter a room not knowing what to expect, with your mind imagining the worst. Yes. You now know I can be such a wimp! Then again it is Hunger Games and not World War 3 : Zombie Edition, which I heard has better dynamics with motion sensor activated props. That should be a really challenging room to be in!

The atmosphere of the game room gave out a mysterious vibe and the youths promptly busied themselves, exploring every nook and cranny in the room that was laden with clues. Each clue was vital to find that elusive key to unlock more rooms, in search for even more clues to find the master key that would get all of us out. Be prepared to utilize every bit of your brain cells!

The rooms were curated differently and gave different vibes. I have to admit, the background music also played a big part in keeping you in a state of anxiety or frenzy for some. I shan't be a spoiler by describing the game too much. I guess you just have to be there to experience it yourself!

It wasn't as easy to solve the puzzles but with the help of 3 lifelines given in each game, it somewhat made more sense to piece the puzzles together. The best part was, watching them work together as a team, interacting and solving the puzzles together. (Make it 'super like' that they gave their smartphones a break!)

A peek into the first room as we enter.
Special thanks to the staff at Kandahar Street (we met Nur and Hendra. And thank you to Sarah for organizing this), who have very polite and cheerful dispositions. Throughout our experience there, they were very helpful and provided enough guidance to the youths so that they could complete the mission. I will definitely give them thumbs up for the pleasant service!

Here's what these 15 year old players had to say about the game :

Hmmm, very much in unison about what they think! I guess that just about sums up why you should try out Trapped, especially since the school term break is just less than a week away. You can enjoy the games with your friends and family, suitable for most ages. (But just a caution, do ensure that the younger ones aren't afraid of the darkness.)

Here are their current promotional game rates as I know it :

Peak period: : $24/pax (Monday to Friday after 6pm, weekends & PH)

Student price: $18/pax (Monday to Friday before 6pm, students below 21 years old)

[Product Review] ZTE Blade V5 Lux

Although I would like to think I have a little tech geekiness in me, I found out I was not so much as I thought I was. It was a little challenging in the beginning, for me to try out one of the latest android smartphone model, ZTE Blade V5 Lux. Mind you, it is my first time dabbling with an android phone but I am so thankful that my 15 year old son kicked start this phone for me to use so that I can work on this review. And strangely, I actually got a hang of using it!

Have you heard of ZTE?

I'm not going to bore you with it's history but here's a short introduction about them :

ZTE it is a well-known multinational telecommunication equipment and network solutions company in Shenzhen, China. They are among the top 5 largest smartphone manufacturers worldwide to offer a complete range of mobile devices and aims to be the leading affordable smartphone provider in Singapore and Southeast Asia.

The V5 Lux is a comfortable size for my hand.
ZTE Blade V5 Lux is one of 4 ZTE's flagship models that was launched not too long ago in Singapore. The Lux V5 is a dual-SIM quad-core smartphone and is marketed to be a "great camera for the constant traveler".

I love big phone screens (because my long sightedness has kicked in) without the need for the phone to be bulky and the V5 Lux meets my need so the size is just right. It is equipped with a 5 inch IPS screen display by Sharp and boasts an impressive 1280 x 720 resolution. With a 1GB RAM, it allows users to multitask seamlessly by viewing videos at the same time while browsing the internet or even sending a message. Very useful for people like me, who likes to multi-task.

The other significant selling point for me, would be the dual-SIM feature. This means both SIM cards can be used at once - SIM card 1 being the active SIM card and SIM card 2 is the standby card.  In other words, you have two different SIM cards and you can use them both from one phone. It translates to using SIM cards from different service providers and even from different countries. You can also make and receive calls and text messages from either card at any time. This feature is a must-have for travelers, for staying connected even when overseas.

Probably one of the other important feature that I look for in a smartphone, is it's camera function because I really like to have fun with my phone camera on the go. Let me share some technical information gathered from it's original source :

"It has a Sony 13MP BSI rear camera with LED flash and f/2.2 aperture to capture scenic shots when traveling. The camera function is also preloaded with ZTE’s industry-leading Neovision photography technology that supports independent control of focus, light metering, white balance, electronics aperture and slow shutter speed."

Did you get all that jargon? I had to experience it for myself to be sure.

(Note : the photos below captured from the phone was slightly enhanced with contrast on the phone's built-in photo editor.)

This one was taken indoor in yellow lighting.

This one was taken indoor with some natural lighting.
This one was taken outdoor.
(note : the colors in the photos were not enhanced.)

In my opinion, the photos here were neither too shabby nor too great. Then again, we should not be expecting high end photos coming from a phone camera so I would just say that the photos turn out pretty decent. The colors are not compromised and it is as vibrant as we see it here.

As for storage space for photos or videos, apart from the internal storage of 8GB, it also has an expansion slot that can take up to 32GB of storage space, which is absolutely good news for phone photography buffs like me!

By now, you would probably be interested to know about it's battery life. In the beginning, upon fully charging the phone, the children and I explored with it via wifi connection at home, without any SIM card. We surfed the internet a fair bit - probably about an hours' usage each day. We snapped many silly photos/videos of each other (no, am not showing you), watched some youtube channels and downloaded some game apps to play. Surprisingly, the battery only started to drain on the 4th night, despite not having it turned off the whole time. Therefore in my opinion, it is safe to say that the battery would definitely last a full day before charging is required.

What I Like About the Phone

It is a great looking phone, affordable and functional mid-entry level smartphone for daily usage. The resolution is rather impressive and it is quite easy to navigate. Anything beyond this can be quite subjective because it really depends what a consumer is looking for. Though I can definitely say that it is a very conventional smartphone if you are considering an Andriod based device. The dual SIM support is an extra plus point when considering this phone.

The ZTE Blade V5 Lux is available at S$329 (w/o contract). Please refer to ZTE Singapore facebook page for store listing.

Till the next post, have a wonderful day!

Pick A Musical Instrument and Play A Song in 4 Lessons? Cool!

The year end school term break is less than a week away. In fact, the holiday has already begun for secondary school students. If you are not so in touch with the secondary school term break, it starts 3 weeks earlier than those in primary school. It.Is.A.Very.Long.Break.

Have you planned how you would occupy your mini mes during this term break? There are many holiday courses that are out there now and if your child has yet to embark on a music journey (or wants to try out a new musical instrument), you may like to consider signing them up for a music course with The Eighth Note Music School.

I was introduced to The Eighth Note Music School a couple of months' back and was immediately drawn to their holiday music lessons for my children. As my children do not have any form of music background, I was pretty excited to find out that this music school gives crash courses in playing a choice instrument. Better yet, learn to play a song that they like in 4 lessons? I was sold.

Don't be mistaken, I am all for sending children to learn music the classical way - which The Eighth Note also provides. However, I feel my children would be better off pursuing and sticking to an interest they want to learn instead of being coerced into it - especially when it's for leisure. I've seen many drop out halfway (namely myself) because they are not able to cope with extra demands and I don't wish to ply on more exams on them! Having too much on their plate may just have a backlash effect and the joy of playing a musical instrument may be marred. Therefore these short music courses offered at The Eighth Note are very ideal for them especially when they are at the age where pop/rock songs are the rage.

Brandon decided to sign himself up for the 'Digital Music Course', whereas Megan signed herself up for a crash course on electronic keyboard, after going through 2 separate trials on the guitar and the keyboard. I must commend the school for exercising a lot of patience to Megan as she was torn between deciding the 2 instruments. She finally decided on the keyboard because we already own a full size one at home and would be ideal for her since Brandon could play the guitar. Then they can come up with their own band! #justsaying

I couldn't be prouder when she could play "A Thousand Years" after 1 lesson.

Please pardon the background noise as I recorded this at the school before her 2nd session started.

The Digital Music Course that Brandon signed up for is a new course offered at the school. He was introduced by the teacher to 'Garage Band' app that can be downloaded into the ipad for a small price. Though it is an app that anyone can download and play around with, it does take some knowledge to come up with their own music. Listening intently, understanding and knowing how to layer each function is a fundamental step to composing a successful tune. After a lesson, Brandon decided to try his hands on the blues!

What I Like About The Eighth Note Music School

It is not exactly an ordinary music school, in my opinion. When I first stepped into their Parkway Centre branch, I could sense a lot of love and passion in the air from the teachers manning the place. They were genuinely warm, patient, young, motivated and dynamic - which suited the style that the school put across to me. All these traits were affirmed when I sat in to observe their lessons.

I also appreciate it very much that the school offer trials before your child decides which instrument he or she is comfortable with learning, before signing up for a course. This is important so that the teachers can also help to identify if the instrument picked is suitable and for them to gauge the pace of learning for each individual.

The other plus point for me is their flexible timing, as I've observed that the teachers are able to schedule time slots to suit your availability, since the lessons are mostly catered one-to-one. Lessons are conducted per 4 lessons and if you have to miss a class, the make up lesson is not chargeable.

Last but not least, the most important factor would be their pool of multi-talented teachers - as they are the ones who connect with our children, they must also be the ones our children like and can look up to as positive role models. Why do I say multi-talented? Because the ones we connected with can play and teach multiple musical instruments! I'm so glad that the teachers we've met so far at Parkway Centre are nothing but a cheerful and enthusiastic lot.

"Thank you Hafiz and Alicia, and everyone we've met at the Parkway Centre branch! You've been so accommodating and welcoming to us! Brandon and Megan are certainly enjoying their lessons with you so far because of your stress-free teachings and positive vibes."

As of now, my children are still pursuing their last few lessons with The Eighth Note. Megan is learning to play different kinds of chord styles with the existing song that she learned. Brandon will soon be tasked with an advanced project in creating music and perhaps a ring tone!

[Food Review] Marina South Curry House

The last time I stepped foot in the Tanjong Pagar vicinity was about 7 years ago, when I had a little private jewelry showcase invitation for the female staff in a recruitment office, during lunch hour. A few days ago, I was back at the area for a food tasting session with Marina South Curry House, and at a mall called 100am, which *ahem, I never knew existed. I certainly felt alien. Well, at least, now I know I have one more mall in my to-shop list!

Anyway, back to my post. I found out, that the restaurant name Marina South Curry House, does not imply that their dishes are 100% curry based, as anyone would have rightly assumed so. They used to operate in Marina South but that was a very long time ago. It was a relief to know that they serve up old school zhichar dishes that caters to everyone in the family. So no worries there if there are family members, like my children, who are not into spicy food yet.

The ambience of the restaurant portrays a sense of the olden days - nothing fanciful but definitely a comfortable and cosy setting, which I like.

S$3.90 per drink
We were introduced to try their signature drink - Iced Buah Long Long or buah kedongdong, which is better known in Malay. It was my first time trying it and I quite like it. It was slightly tart with a hint of mango flavor. Refreshing! It is a must-try.

S$8.90 per dish
When we dine with children, the sweet and sour pork dish is always a must-have at a zhichar stall. We liked the fact that the meat is very tender and not flour-filled crusted. There's enough of the sweet and the sour, which makes it an appetizing dish.

S$8.90 per dish
Pork ribs, when cooked right, is tender and it's meat will fall off the bones. It is our first time having curried pork ribs. This was a pretty flavorful dish and went great with our plain rice. If you are a novice with curry, this would probably suit your tastebud as it is mild. Spiciness level : 2 out of 5.

S$8.90 per dish
With a special dish name like that, how is it possible that it wouldn't taste heavenly? I've never come across such an exotic vegetable dish with a combination of long beans, aubergine, okra and stink bean (petai). The rempah (mixed spices) infused well with the vegetables and is very delectable! I'll be very happy to pair this alone with plain rice. Spiciness level : 3 out of 5.

S$8.90 per dish
It tasted nothing like the curried pork ribs, even though the curry looks the same. If you have a penchant for mutton, you will definitely enjoy this dish. I am quite particular about the gamey mutton flavor which was hardly present in this curry. Spiciness level is also pretty low : 2 out of 5.

S$18.90 per claypot
The 'Fish Head Bee Hoon' was a much awaited dish as the family is always on the quest for the best one. This is definitely not your typical kind of fish bee hoon soup you would expect from a zhichar stall. Although we appreciate that it was cooked with a rich, tasty and superior broth that has been simmered for over 6 hours, we couldn't help but be a little let down with a tad of fishiness in the soup that night. There is certainly room for improvement and I'm confident the chef will live up to the expectations of this dish in due time. This claypot 'Fish head bee hoon' is good for sharing.

S$6.90
I can't help but think of my favorite Thai food when I see green curry.  The chicken meat is tender and the aroma of the curry is pretty mouth-watering. It would have been perfect if it was a little less salty. Spiciness level : 2 out of 5

S$9.90
A wholesome vegetable dish which is lightly flavored. I love the crunch of the bok-choy, which was cooked to perfection.

S$12.90 per plate
Another dish we looked forward to having that night was the 'Salted Egg Chicken Wings' which met our expectations. Fried to perfection with salted egg coating, it gives the dish a very distinctive taste which  my children liked - even though they don't take salted eggs and were of course, not aware it was coated with it! The crispy skin was a plus.

The friendly boss of Marina South Curry House also served up 2 new fish dishes for us to try, which will be available at their new concept stall which I am looking forward to patronize. It's location is still a secret but I just had to share what I tried. I absolutely love the sambal fish dish shown on the left photo. Whereas my children enjoyed the sweet and tangy coated one on the right. The fish used were very fresh, soft and meaty. Definitely something to look forward to! The stall will ready for operation by year end so stay tuned for news of the location at their facebook page. It may just be very near you.

Overall food experience :  8/10
The food is fresh and the portions served are pretty generous. We especially like that the prices are kept affordable. A very family friendly and casual place to dine with attentive service. I would definitely go back to try their hor fun dishes, which looks very yummy too.

Many thanks to Agnes and Irene of ATMC for the invite.

[Product Review] Dyson Cool Air Multiplier Bladeless Fan AM08.

The weather, of late, has been very unkind. To be constantly surrounded by the hot and stagnant air is a terrible feeling, especially when we are at home. Even though we have a ceiling fan in our living room and standing fans in every bedroom in our apartment, it does not really improve the air flow quality.

It was extremely timely for the good people at Dyson to invite me to review their bladeless pedestal fan, model AM08, just when we were thinking of upgrading to a better quality fan for our study room. This is probably the only room where we spend our afternoons together during the weekend and use our computers concurrently. I have seen and ogled at Dyson's bladeless fans at the electronics store for a long while now and it still amazes me how a bladeless fan works to deliver cool wind. A window fan without any blades is certainly the most eye-catching and interesting invention!

Assembly Of Fan

Assembling a fan should always be a simple and straightforward experience. The setting up for AM08 only consisted of  aligning the parts with arrows indicated, then "clicking" them together - the base and the loop amplifier. It didn't take us more than 10 minutes to get the fan ready to supplement our very humid home with a smooth flow of cool breeze.

Need For Speed

The average pedestal fan has limited speed settings - usually low, medium and high. The Dyson AM08 has an impressive 10 precise airflow settings!  I am pleased that we can each find a suitable fan speed to suit our preference at different times of the day.

Image captured from Dyson's website.
Here's A Little Bit Of The Technical Stuff

The Dyson bladeless fan is now 35% quieter, with streamlined airflow system. The Air Multiplier technology allows air to accelerate through an annular aperture, drawing in surrounding air to project smooth, powerful, high-velocity airflow. No blades = No choppy air.

And there it is - the very handsome Dyson pedestal fan that has found a permanent place in our study room!

Image captured from Dyson's website to show it's oscillation and tilt feature.
As you can see from our seating arrangement, you would probably be able to imagine how the previous sharing of a traditional tower fan could not serve our individual needs to keep us cool due to the limited oscillation feature. However, the Dyson's AM08 has proven to be able to channel powerful streamlined air which delivers a decent amount of wind to each of us. Better yet, this technology produces 15% less energy consumption which will definitely be kinder to our monthly electrical bill. We may not see it now but in the long run, I'm looking forward to the significant savings.

I have also heard and read about Dyson fans being rather noisy so I had to hear it for myself. In all fairness, anyone should be able to figure that the higher the speed of any kind of fan, the more power is needed to deliver the wind, hence some 'noise' will be generated. I tested the highest speed at level 10 and listened but it is nothing like any noise a traditional fan would make. In fact, the current generation of Dyson's fans are apparently up to 75% quieter across their fan range, compared to those made before. In any case, it doesn't affect us at all.

What I Like Best

Perhaps one of the most incredible feature of this fan would be it's safety feature - the absolute non-danger of someone sticking their hands into the fan. Cleaning has also been a breeze! (pun intended) Just a quick swipe along the exposed surface with a cloth or a duster would suffice. Where have you been all my life?

Our Family's Verdict : 9/10

It is a great fan and proven to be the best one we've ever known, own and enjoying - although the price tag is much steeper than others which can be the main setback when making a decision to purchase a fan. The simple, sleek and modern design will look great and fit into any part of the home and the bladeless design helps move the air around effectively. It is safe and easy to maintain - which is my personal plus point. Buyers should consider the quality and efficiency of this fan that can be hard to beat.

Till the next post, have a blessed week!
