Qualities of A Successful Small Craft Business

Building a successful brand, in my case it's handmade lifestyle jewelry, does not happen overnight. It takes a whole lot of commitment, persistence and perseverance to be where one wants to be. Most times, when you hear about someone's success in their business undertaking, they have probably already started honing their skills very much earlier before getting noticed. And 'success' deems differently for each individual. For me, success is about my passion, tenacity, building self-worth, trust and relationships.

I remember my daughter asking me this question very recently, "mummy, do you think dancing is a talent?", and I said "yes" because I certainly do not have any talent there! But she went on to quip that with practice and perseverance, anyone can actually dance well. I paused and pondered. There is certainly truth in her observation which also speaks volume to my personal journey at Adeline's Loft. There was no particular 'talent' to speak of before I discovered my interest in making jewelry. It was indeed something that was nurtured over the years (11 years and still practicing). It was only after my 6th year into this little hobby business that I found my purpose and concept behind what I love to do. So if you happen to be in a rut with your handmade venture, you are not alone.

I have thought through about my little business journey and decided to share about what I think is the essential qualities one should possess. I hope it will help inspire you along with your journey, if you are on one like me.

Do you have a signature style?

It took a long time for me to find mine, which I am glad it is still reflected in my current style even though over time, it did evolved a fair bit. It may not be a style that everyone would appreciate but it will certainly be one that you are most skilled at. This is about staying true with what you enjoy doing and not just following trends. When you enjoy your work, it is reflected in your pieces.

Do you communicate the value of your work accordingly?

I often put myself in my buyers' shoes. I would ask myself if the price is affordable and if the value of the product in terms of labor, cost of materials and originality, are in place. Define a story of what you are doing so that you can attract the right clientele to your brand.

Do you have a regular clientele base?

There are clients who will always be supportive of your work, and then some who are 'touch and go'. It's the same everywhere. The right clients would always love your creations and wear what you make. It may not be a big number of clients but they appreciate your designs and are often your biggest source of referrals. They are also the ones who will bump up the value of your brand. Hence, it is essential to maintain a good customer relationship with them.

Will you stay dedicated to your craft?

We celebrate when in good times. Would you quit when in bad times? Or be resilient and stay on course, adapt new techniques and move forward? We must learn to adjust, and know when it is time to cut out on things that aren't working and confident enough to try out new things that would enhance our experience and skills. Always go back to why you started out in the first place and keep building on it. By all means, get inspired by your favourite craft artisans when you need to but NEVER copy others' work, because successful brands do not prosper that way.

How Soon Can I Receive The Box?

Anything Else I Need To Know Before Buying This Box?

First of all, if you are unfamiliar with Adeline's Loft, do take some time to browse through my past creations in my album. From there, you would be able to gauge the genre of designs I usually come up with.

Local standard postage is free, which may take 2-4 working days to arrive. Smartpac service (door delivery, tracking service by Singpost) is a next day delivery at S$4 additional.

*Again, I reiterate that there is usually some risk using local standard mail, which I cannot control after the box is mailed. (From personal experience, 95% of the time, packages are delivered safely.) Therefore, I cannot be held responsible for any loss of mail.*

Overseas order is also welcomed at a flat shipping rate of S$8.00 by registered mail. However, please allow a longer time frame for the arrival of the shipment as there could be delays during transition. Estimate time frame for overseas shipment between 2-4 weeks.

Can I Return Any Items If I Don't Find It Suitable?

50 Experiences for 500 Kids - The Collective Effort

Every end of year, especially during Christmas time, my heart often goes out to the less privileged children in Singapore. Hence, I made a commitment to myself that I would pay-it-forward by donating a small portion of my earnings from jewelry making to the needy every December. I have always been looking out for worthy causes that I could contribute to and am really glad to have found one that I feel strongly for, this year.

This is an inaugural project by The Collective Effort (TCE) to raise funds for 500 children from the financially challenged families in our community. In conjunction with SG50, TCE has planned 50 fun and memorable experiences for children aged between 7-12 years during the year end holidays. TCE have been working together with neighborhood schools to identify these children (low income, latched-key, single parent or from FAS scheme), as well as those from institutions from Sinda and Grace Mentorship, to bring them the simple joys that many of us may have taken for granted.

Adeline's Loft is very pleased to connect and collaborate with TCE. I have pledged 10 pieces of classic bespoke creations to raise funds for this purpose. 100% of sale proceeds will be going into this project.

Please help support TCE's meaningful project, to reach their goal for each disadvantaged child to enjoy a day of unique experiences that they will remember for many years to come. My Current Obsession with Felt

If you follow me on instagram or Adeline's Loft facebook page, you would probably notice a flood of photos on felt creations that I have been making recently. Somehow, I feel that working with felt has allowed me to explore and unleash my truest-to-the-true creative juices... in an artistic kind of way. Truth be told, I find that it gives me immense gratification when I see my ideas come to life. And I can't seem to stop making them for now!

Felt, if you look around at craft shops, is not an expensive material to work with. Having made quite a number of felt creations already, apart from getting sparked with ideas, I think the only factor that I will attribute to it's "complexity" in completing a piece is the time I spend on each creation. Hence, it also explains why it may cost a little more. These days, I need to draw out my ideas and see if it is a feasible design to work. Thereafter, I would need to draw a template of the designs before I cut the shapes out from the felt. I just love the flexibility of creating a shape (any shape!) out of a plain material and thereafter adorning it with beads to make it different from the norm.

Apart from the drawing and cutting of material, the step that takes up the most time would be putting the pieces of felt together and lovingly hand stitched. Each completed creation is bound by 2 pieces (front and back), double stitched on the edges so that it can hold up the shape nicely and not just a floppy single piece of felt. In the case of this birdie pendant necklace above, it is stuffed with cotton wool for a three dimensional finish.

Wearing a felt based jewelry is all about having fun while sprucing up your outfits, in a very artistic kind of way. It can be bold like the red one above, which is truly a stunning piece I have ever made. (Yes, I love it very much actually!) Jewelry Crafting with Handmade Felt Beads

Last year, I started working with felt materials, incorporating them into my jewelry creations. I was very pleased with the end product of the several custom made pieces. Though it took so much more time to complete, it was certainly gratifying to see a vision in my head coming to life.

 

These are the few pieces I had created, working with felt based material.

 Recently, I began to dabble with felt again. But this time, I made the felt beads from scratch. Using the wet felting method. If you are interested, here is one of the many tutorials I have come across and picked up tips from.

These are some of the plain felt beads I had made.

And these are some of the creations I've made recently, using my own handmade felt beads.

Remember seeing the plain felt beads at the top part of this post? Well, I decided that plain is just too boring so I got down to sew some simple designs on it! Sewing on these beads took a lot of my time so you can say this is a very labor intensive jewelry. I spent at least 30-45 minutes on each one. Here's my end product.

And what did I do with these beads? I made a piece of jewelry art. Something that I've always challenged myself to do and showcase that the possibilities are endless when it comes to creating!

Wired together with folded leaf shape blue felt fabric cuttings, white riverstone beads sewn on each "leaf" for added weight. Strung together with black lava textured stones and held by suede strand.

I am truly filled with satisfaction upon the completion of this piece which I had worked on the past few days, piecing the ideas in my head together and making sure the design would work. I have not priced this piece of art yet and I am not so sure if I will be selling it or keep it as part of my personal collection. (Latest update : it's sold!!) 5 Things To Do In A Successful Online Craft Business

Starting an online home craft business can be hard and it's definitely a long journey once you embark on it. I've been on this scene for many years now - 9 years to be exact. Some days, I don't quite believe that I have reached this point where I can be doing what I love and making a small income to sustain my passion. 

If you are dreaming about starting a home craft business, let me tell you that it is possible. It is NOT easy and definitely NOT something that happens with a snap of your fingers. But with patience, commitment and unrelenting passion, it can be done!

Give It Time
While it doesn't take a lot of time to set up an online store, it does take time to build yourself a success and stay committed. There is no shortcut to this.  Take in as much business advise, know your market and work towards having a thriving business. Utilize the free setup of social medias you know to get the word around about what you do. Word of mouth is usually the best tool to get your work noticed! Remember its a marathon, not a sprint.

Stick to Your Specialty

Do what you enjoy most, focus and stick to your niche. You are in for the long haul so it means whatever you make to sell, you need to be happy making it to sell. Online buyers are very discerning and when you are able to sustain their interests in what you do, you are on the right track!

Keep Learning and Exploring

Keep building your skills and explore the different possibilities to build your own personal knowledge bank. You may or may not utilize the extra skills on your craft, but it sure will help you succeed with what you can do better with your business.

Have An Approachable and Professional Online Persona
Having an online business of any sort, it is important to be personable to your clients. They come to you because you can offer something unique to them and it is probably wonderful for them to know that they are communicating directly with the person who makes them. And always, always respond to queries promptly and in a calm and professional way. These are probably what makes a customer stay loyal to you too.

Believe in Yourself
Put your heart and soul into what you love to do.  When you believe in yourself, you are already one step ahead in having a successful craft business. Sure, there are times when you can get disheartened, especially when you are not getting enough orders to sustain you through some days or weeks. But these are temporal and very much part and parcel of any businesses. Be open to changes or take the opportunity to have a short break to recharge and find back your inspiration. Just don't give up!


It is definitely a fascinating, inspiring and life-changing journey. If you have already set your mind in succeeding and know how you should go about doing it, then I think the chances of success is very high. Keep learning and experimenting in whatever you do. You will get there!

[Blog Train] Making Good - Replacing A Broken Clasp on Necklace or Bracelet

It could be a new necklace you just bought or a favorite versatile piece that you've been wearing for the longest time. Then the inevitable happens! The spring clasp break and you aren't sure whether to chuck it (that would be such a waste!) or where to find help to get it fixed.

As far as I am aware, most bead supply shops in Singapore do not cater to helping you fix such dilemmas. Approaching a professional at a retail shop may set you up between S$10-S$20 for this service. As for me, truth be told, when my clients approach me to fix a straightforward broken jewelry like this, there will also be minimal charges to cover workmanship, materials, postage and packaging which would be between $4-$6. This of course, also excludes the (hassle) to and fro mailing plus the waiting time.

So with just a little investment on your end, I hope this post will help you make good your own broken jewelry without the need to part with so much cash just to get a broken clasp replaced. Here's a quick list of what you will need :

Lobster clasp or spring clasp

You can buy a small quantity of this at any bead supply shop. A small packet would usually consist of 4-6 pieces which should cost you no more than 40 cents a piece. They come in various sizes and shapes too! Get one that you are comfortable with handling.

Jump rings

These round little loops are required for connecting parts together, in this case, the new clasp. A small packet would usually have at least a dozen pieces which should cost you no more than 10 cents a piece. They come in various gauge (thickness of wire) and sizes. Ask the staff at the bead shop to help you select the appropriate one. Or better yet, ask them to help pick out the components you need to get your item fixed.

Pliers

To help with the opening and closure of the jump rings. I don't suggest you buy them but if you do, a mini set would cost you no more than $9.  A standard set will comprise of a flat nose pliers, sharp nose pliers (both shown in the photo below) and a cutter. Or look around your dad's or hubby's tool box for something similar because you basically just need them to help open and close the jump rings. Alternatively, you can also try using tweezers.

Here's a little video tutorial I took using my mobile phone, of how a broken clasp is replaced. Or if the existing jump ring holding the broken clasp is not damaged, you can recycle it.

Just a couple more tips to note :

- in the video, do observe the proper way of opening up the jump rings. Using both pliers, twist one side open toward you and the other away from you. There's no need to open up too wide lest it gets distorted. Do the same when closing the ring till the ends meet. It is wrong to open jump rings apart by pulling the ends away in a left and right motion as it will cause more distortion and may result in breakage.

- using the same method in the video, you can also do the same for replacing extension chains in your accessories, connect broken chains or even earrings.

Nueyer is from sunny Singapore and started crafting/sewing from young.  As school and work commitments came along, the crafting got less and less until it disappeared.  However, when there was a need to sew an odd-sized pillow case for Big One, the crafting bug came alive!  Now, I can't stop crafting and hope that one day, I'll be able to make some change to this world, no matter how small.

Earrings, one of the most popular choice of accessories for women because earrings help shape faces and is the closest accessory to wear that attracts attention to your face. Enhancing your facial features goes a long way and no matter how small a pair of earrings is, it does play a big part in accentuating your overall look.

Wearing earrings is also not about keeping up with the latest trends. Imagine having to wear a really glamorous pair of jewelry that is in vogue but doesn't compliment your style - that would probably be quite... disastrous. Therefore, it is important to match the earrings, with your outfits or occasions.

What's the right earrings for my face shape?

There are many earrings available in stores to suit every face shape. I have come across a few clients who tell me that there are certain earring designs I should avoid making for them because of their body frame. Factually, it should be the face shape that should determine the kind of earrings that suit you rather than your body frame. "Clothes maketh the man", not your face shapes.

With some knowledge I've learn along the way, here's a compilation to help you get the right earrings for your face shape, which will be useful to take note on your next shopping trip! But first of all, have you determined your face shape?

  Round Face    Avoid hoop styles. Go for long, clean-cut oblong designs which draw the eye downwards and help make your face look longer and narrower.    Sample of earrings styles.

 

 Oval Face

You are truly blessed because you have the ideal face shape. Any style is good to try at your whims and fancies!

   Try mismatched earrings for a playful look!  

 

Heart-shaped face

  Look for bold designs and shapes that are wide at the bottom and end several inches below your lobes.

Square-shaped face
Avoid rectangle or harsh-angle styles. Hoop and teardrop designs are a better bet as they help balance out the angular shape of your face.  

  Oblong shaped face (rectangular or long shaped) 
For elongated face, it is appropriate to wear short styled earrings or 3 dimensional stud earrings. You can wear round, square-shaped or triangular earrings, but do make sure that the triangle is with its wide side down. Avoid wearing flat or long dangling earrings.  

 

Tip!  

When wearing statement or over sized dangly earrings, keep your outfit simple so that the earrings can help accentuate the beauty of your face and not vie for attention with your clothes. When in doubt, the safest pair of earrings to wear are medium sized stud ones - like a pair of man-made diamond earrings, solid metal or pearls. Nothing too loud but enough to make a subtle statement.
